February 2009 Tech Session |
Since I was in need of repairing my “turn signal cancel” feature I contacted Matt and we set up a Tech session at my place so that those of us who need an occasional Corvette Bull Session could participate. The usual suspects showed up and we went to work. The job requires two different pullers to get down to the "cancel cam" and I had one and Jim Adams supplied the other. It's a special rig that attaches to the shaft and compresses the horn preload spring so the locking plate "C" ring can be removed. |
| We managed to get down to the "cancel cam" fairly quickly and replace it. There was a slight difference between the cam we removed and the replacement unit. The replacement piece was advertised as usable on '68 to '82. We quickly learned that with no modification, it simply allowed the horn to be on at all times by not holding the preload spring centered. We bent two of the three copper contacts up from horizontal so that they would act as both contacts and centering tabs. ( see the last picture) The original cam had plastic tabs that held the spring centered. If I had purchased an "NOS" cam it undoubtedly would have worked without modification. We tested our adjustment out, reassembled the column, set up the telescope tightening ring, honked the horn, and tested the turn signal cancel feature. As is always the case, the job took longer and was more difficult than I anticipated but we got it done and ordered pizza. I now have a steering column that works properly so that on road trips other members won’t always be on my case to turn off my turn signal. |
